A sonohysterogram at The North Carolina Center for Reproductive Medicine (NCCRM) is a type of ultrasound that evaluates the inside of a woman’s uterus. This test is typically performed when doing fertility testing, right before IVF, or if a patient has symptoms of a possible uterine abnormality. During a sonohysterography at NCCRM Fertility Center Cary, NC, a very thin catheter is placed inside the patient’s cervical opening. Then, a saline solution is slowly introduced through the catheter. The saline solution will flow through the uterus, and the uterine walls will open slightly. A transvaginal ultrasound will then show NCCRM doctors the uterine shape and walls, and pictures will be taken.
Why Would A Patient Need A Sonohysterogram
Some discomfort may be felt, but typically a sonohysterogram will not hurt. Reasons for ordering a sonohysterogram include but are not limited to:
- infertility
- two or more miscarriages in a row
- extremely heavy or unusually light periods
- mid-cycle spotting
- abnormal menstrual cramps
- post-menopausal bleeding
- pelvic pain or pressure
- before an IVF treatment to confirm there are no uterine problems that may interfere with embryo implantation
A sonohysterogram at NCCRM, a fertility center in Cary, NC, looks for and can detect the following:
- uterine shape and congenital uterine abnormalities like uterine septum, which is when tissue divides the uterus
- non-cancerous growths, known as polyps, on the uterine lining
- fibroids
- scar tissue, known as uterine adhesions
- abnormal endometrial tissue growths, which may or may not be cancerous
- the overall thickness or thinness of the uterine wall and endometrium
Depending on the results of your sonohysterogram, NCCRM will contact the patient about the next steps of their fertility treatment plan.
