When to Visit a Fertility Specialist

When to Visit a Fertility Specialist

For those that are trying to conceive, it can seem like a never-ending waiting game as the months go by. If you feel as if it might be time to consult with a fertility specialist, follow this guide:

Under 35 and Healthy

If you are under the age of 35 and healthy, wait a year before visiting a fertility specialist. It can take couples up to 12 months to get pregnant, so don’t rush to the doctor just yet. Patients in their 20s and early 30s should try to conceive or not use birth control for 12 months before visiting a doctor.

Over 35

The chances of conceiving are lowered around the age of 35 as a woman’s egg supply decreases over time. If you have been unable to conceive after 6 months, it is recommended to see a fertility specialist.

Over 40

A women’s eggs drop in both quality and quantity after the age of 40. This means that the chances of conceiving are fewer and the risk for miscarriage is greater. At the age of 40, about half of a woman’s embryos contain an abnormal number of chromosomes. Visit a fertility specialist right away; women in their forties are more likely to need fertility treatments.

High or Low BMI

If a woman has a BMI under 18 or over 30, she may be at a higher risk for infertility as well as complications during pregnancy. If you are underweight or overweight, consider talking to your doctor about how to achieve a better BMI before trying to conceive.

Thyroid Condition

If you have a thyroid condition, it is best to see a fertility specialist right away. Your thyroid is tied to your hormones, so it can impact your chances of conceiving and having a healthy pregnancy. Abnormal thyroid function may be associated with miscarriage, infertility, and abnormalities of fetal brain development.

Known Reproductive Issue

Women with a known reproductive issue like PCOS or endometriosis should be evaluated as soon as they begin attempting to conceive. Many women with PCOS do not ovulate, so medications are needed.
