How to Talk to Your Partner About Infertility

How to Talk to Your Partner About Infertility

Infertility can be a scary concept, especially when you haven’t shared your thoughts with your partner. The topic can be disappointing and you may not be ready to share that. The causes of infertility can range from conditions such as endometriosis to genetics. No matter why or how, it is important to share these concerns with your partner. This conversation should be open and understanding, and no one should go in with a make-or-break mentality. Go in to the conversation with a positive outlook, and keep a few things in mind.

Be Open

Go in to this conversation with all the facts. You want to be open with your partner and tell them everything they need to know. Keeping secrets can only hurt the relationship further. Putting all the facts out on the table can create an open discussion of the next steps. Both sides should be able to express their feelings and ask any questions they may have. The conversation should be focused on “we” not “I”. Keep in mind that you may not be the only one with fertility concerns.

Not as Uncommon as You Think

Although the topic can be sensitive, it is still important to know you are not alone. At the reproductive age, 9% of men and 11% of women in the U.S. are facing infertility. You also have your partner. During this challenging time it is helpful to show your support and offer reinforcements to stay positive.

Bring it to The Doctor

If you are new to the topic of fertility, the idea can be hard to understand. There are a lot of myths that circle around, so the best first step to take is going to see your doctor. Don’t go in judging or assuming. Have an open mind and see what the doctor has to say. With so many options out there, conceiving may not be as far fetched as you once thought.
