Thyroid
The thyroid is a small gland located in your neck. The lining of the uterus is known as the endometrium. Endometriosis is a gynecologic condition where bits of tissue similar to the endometrium are located in areas of the body outside the uterus. They can appear anywhere in the pelvic cavity including: the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic sidewall, and the uterosacral ligaments.
There is a strong association between endometriosis and infertility, but a true cause and effect relationship has not been established. However, we know infertility can result from the following:
- Endometriosis lesions in the fallopian tubes cause scarring to the point of blockage, preventing sperm and egg interaction.
- Ovarian cysts composed of endometriosis lesions (endometriomas, or “chocolate cysts”) impair egg production and ovulation.
