Do you suffer from Polycistic Ovarian Syndrome?

Do you suffer from Polycistic Ovarian Syndrome?

Well, you are not alone.  According to an article from Scary Mommy, nearly 10% of women suffer from PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. This is a common health problem caused by a hormonal imbalance of the reproductive hormones. And out of all the symptoms, infertility is typically the most common of all the symptoms suffered by women with PCOS, as it causes an anovulatory state for these women (meaning that they don’t ovulate).

Other symptoms include:

  • irregular menstrual cycles
  • too much hair growth, such as on the face, chin, and other parts of the body where men normally grow hair.
  • Acne on the face, chest, and upper back
  • Weight gain, or difficulty losing weight
  • Darkening of skin, particularly along neck creases, the groin, and underneath the breasts.
  • Skin tags

However, it is important to keep in mind that PCOS sufferers each can have their own unique set of symptoms. It is not a one size fits all type of syndrome.

The exact cause of polycystic ovarian syndrome, is unknown, but most experts think that several factors, including genetics play a role:

High levels of androgens, also known as male hormones, could negatively affect a regular cycle. This is because high levels of androgens could prevent the release of a mature egg. This can also cause extra hair growth and acne, as mentioned before.

High levels of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that controls how the food you eat is changed into energy. Over time, high insulin levels could reach to type 2 diabetes and cause difficulties if a pregnancy were to occur.

But don’t worry, there are many different treatment options available for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. Physicians at NCCRM are available to help you navigate your choices and help you achieve your goal of motherhood. Contact us today at 919-233-1680 for your initial appointment.
