Previous reports have suggested that caffeine, primarily in the form of coffee, is linked to infertility.
Now a recent study makes an even more specific link and finds that 5 or more cups of coffee a day can lead to infertility.
Specifically, this level of coffee consumption drops IVF success rates 50% and cuts the live-birth rate by 40%.
Researchers collected this data from nearly 4,000 Danish women who were undergoing either IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection treatment for infertility. The scientists collected information on the women’s coffee consumption at the beginning of every fertility treatment. Interestingly, drinking less than 5 cups of coffee a day had no effect on fertility outcomes. Though these data are preliminary, they do suggest that drinking heavy amounts of coffee could impede IVF success.
