3 Post-35 Pregnancy Myths Exposed

Are you over the age of 35 and facing infertility challenges? The North Carolina Center for Reproductive Medicine (NCCRM) has supported couples in North Carolina and along the East Coast with advanced reproductive techniques since its founding. NCCRM was established to help couples who dream of having a child, regardless of their challenges. At NCCRM in Cary, NC, we believe that age doesn’t have to define your fertility journey, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. Here are three common myths about getting pregnant after 35 clarified.

MYTH #1: Women Can’t Get Pregnant After Age 35

Pregnancy happens when an egg is fertilized by a sperm. That said, if a woman still has eggs, she can get pregnant regardless of age. However, we know that women do not have an endless supply of eggs like men have an endless supply of sperm. Women are born with around 1 million eggs. By the time they hit puberty, this number decreases to around 300,000, and only about 300 of those eggs will go through ovulation and be released to get fertilized during her lifetime. Unfortunately, women can’t make more eggs for ovulation, but that doesn’t make getting pregnant impossible.

MYTH #2: It’s Too Risky To Have A Baby After 35

While there are some known risks associated with childbearing later in the reproductive timeline, there are also plenty of simple and effective measures to optimize the chances of having a happy and healthy pregnancy after 35. Seeking prenatal care early in the pregnancy, keeping a positive outlook, and staying mindful of all the benefits and rewards of a new baby added to your family will only make the process easier.

MYTH #3: Your Diet Doesn’t Affect Your Chances Of Getting Pregnant

To most people’s surprise, a woman’s diet has a bigger effect on fertility than most people realize. Lifestyle and dietary changes are some of the most promising interventions to help women improve their chances of getting pregnant after 35. Always remember to eat healthy fats and unrefined carbs, incorporate anti-oxidant-rich foods, and add in some plant-based protein when possible, as well as folate, iron, selenium, Vitamin D, and DHA. Also, getting your partner on board with your healthy eating choices will make these necessary changes easier. Limiting caffeine intake to less than 300 mg per day and cutting out sugary beverages are ways to increase fertility in both men and women.
